Although she has only been at Bryn Mawr for a couple of months, Ms. Cardall has won the hearts of both the students and faculty! In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, she and her students alike were able to bring back laughter, tears, and joy to the Bryn Mawr stage under very uncertain circumstances. For these reasons, Ms. Cardall is BMS’ Mawrtian of the Month!
When interviewed about her many firsts at the school, Ms. Cardall described her first impression of Bryn Mawr. She fell in love with the campus and admired the warmth of the community. She loved the peacefulness of the environment as well as the welcoming attitude of the students and faculty.
Given the rigid time frame between the start of school and opening night of The Addams Family musical, Ms. Cardall was under pressure to choose her cast and begin rehearsals right away. However, the most challenging feat of the fall musical for Ms. Cardall was the “unknowns” that she hadn’t anticipated. She had never worked on the Centenniel stage before and did not know until the last minute how many students she would be able to have on stage, or if they would have to wear masks due to COVID restrictions. Additionally, she did not want to throw out everything that had been done prior at BMS, but also wanted to represent her vision.
Some of her favorite moments were when the students brought ideas to the table that perhaps she had not thought about before as well as witnessing the creativity the actors incorporated into making each character their own. Fondly she chuckled: “Charlie as Fester, was all him!”
When protocols allow it, Ms. Cardall would love to get involved with the other divisions. She would like to see her students share their skills with the Lower Division, as well as incorporate outdoor performances to make them more accessible and informal.
Personally, Ms. Cardall loves the outdoors. When the weather is nice, she loves hanging out in the various Quads. She also loves to garden, landscape, and go for runs, even in the cold weather. Her favorite play is “Machinal” by Sophie Cadwell, an expressionist play from the early 1900s, which portrays lots of rhythmic movements and sounds. She loves the books The Inquisitor's Tale, and The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog by Adam Gidwitz, which she reads to her children.
Ms. Cardall is pleased to be part of the Bryn Mawr Community and loves the trust that exists between students and faculty. “I love the confidence they have in each other and themselves” she states. The Bryn Mawr Community is so lucky to have gained a teacher such as Ms. Cardall on campus!
